Embracing St. Augustine’s Community Spirit

By Susan Swearingen

In today’s often polarized world, it can feel like we’re more divided than ever. But here in St. Augustine, diversity takes on a shape that’s found not just in obvious differences, but in the tapestry of stories, perspectives, and layers of history that shape our community.

This is an invitation to tap into our own selves and find unity in these subtle differences. The fact is, the more closed off we are from each other, the less richness life holds. We are social beings, and it’s easy to fall into comfortable routines. But when we gently challenge ourselves to try something different, we open ourselves up to growth.

In my own experience as a small business owner, I found real pride in welcoming people to this town. They came here because they wanted to be part of something special, and by welcoming them and showing that spirit of community, it didn’t just add to their experience, it greatly enriched my own sense of pride in our town. There’s something deeply fulfilling about stepping out of the familiar and embracing new connections, both for others and for ourselves.

So let kindness and curiosity guide you. Each small act of openness enriches not only our own lives but the entire community. By stepping outside of our usual patterns and embracing a spirit of kindness, we help create a more welcoming and vibrant St. Augustine. And in the end, it’s these small choices and shared moments that weave together the true richness of our town, helping us all grow together.
