Art Box Studios – A Creative Cultural Haven
St. Augustine has a gem that sits in the heart of the historic area. A place where creativity feels like home, Art Box Studios is a nonprofit creative cultural hub built on the belief that everyone deserves access to beauty, expression, and community.
What began as an unexpected gift of Art Box Gallery has grown into a vibrant, judgment-free space where people of all ages and backgrounds come to make art, decompress, and reconnect with themselves. The studio’s roots trace back to the founder’s childhood, shaped by her father, artist R. Scott English. His open-door philosophy was to always make room for anyone eager to create, which became the foundation of Art Box Studios. Today, that legacy lives on through open tables, stocked supplies, and the warm assurance that you don’t need to be an artist to belong here. All you need is the desire to try.
At Art Box, a “creative community” isn’t a slogan, it’s an experience. Retirees paint beside college students, tourists share stories with locals, and families gather for Free Painting sessions that often become cherished St. Augustine memories. The environment is intentionally welcoming: ADA-accessible, low-cost or free, beginner-friendly, and rooted in the idea that art should never feel intimidating. Perfection isn’t the goal. Presence is.
The impact is felt most through the people who walk through the door. One emerging artist, once unsure of his place in the art world, now fills his studio time with meaningful portrait work, knowing he has steady support when life becomes overwhelming. Another arrived with only a small collection of henna designs and now teaches classes, hosts pop-ups, and thrives with the mentorship and encouragement she found at Art Box. Even visitors who wander in “just to look” often end up creating something personal and healing—proof of the transformative power of a supportive creative space.
A pillar of the organization is the Emerging Artist Program, which offers new or underrepresented artists three months of gallery wall space, a full year of studio access, a marketing stipend, First Friday showcases, and mentorship in curation, pricing, photography, and professional presentation. Many alumni go on to teach, exhibit, and collaborate throughout the community and extend a circle of support that now surrounds the next generation, including Danielle’s children, Bronson and Taya, who are at the heart of why she does this work.
Beyond art, the studio serves as an anchor for mental wellness. Art Box offers a chance to slow down, engage in hands-on creativity, and express what words sometimes cannot. “When people are surrounded by encouragement, they shine,” the founder, Danielle, says, and the studio’s daily atmosphere reflects that truth.
Art Box Studios is growing, with a five-year vision that includes expanded scholarships, deeper artist development programs, teen fellowships, and traveling pop-ups throughout the city. And the community can be part of that momentum by sponsoring scholarships, donating supplies, volunteering, mentoring, attending First Fridays, or connecting the studio with schools and local organizations.
At its core, Art Box Studios stands as a beacon of belonging. Art is the medium, but human connection is the masterpiece. Here, everyone has a seat at the table, a brush within reach, and a community cheering them on.
